Famous people like Edward Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr and so on always stated that the world needs diversity. Diversity in general means differences. Diversity is a good thing for societies, and it is also encouraged to have diversity in any kind of aspects. However, there are still things about diversity that people don’t know.
This article will give you info on things people don’t know about diversity.
The Most Diverse Country
Did you know which country is the most diverse? Many people would say that United State of America is the most diverse country, however that is inaccurate. The most culturally diverse country in the world according to world population review website is Chad. Chad is a country in the African nation. It has over 100 ethnic groups among their 8.6 million of residents.
However, there are other articles stated that Papua New Guinea is the most diverse country. This Oceania country is the most linguistically diverse country in the world. It has approximately around 840 used languages.
Both countries manage to maintain diversity because they are isolated from the modern world. For instance, over 80% of Papua New Guinea lives in rural areas and has minimal contact with western or foreign touch.
In a nutshell, the most culturally diverse country is Chad whereas Papua New Guinea is the most linguistically diverse country.
A Day for Diversity
Do people know there’s a day for diversity? Majority of the people in the world do not know about this day unless it has been shared on the internet. This day is called ‘World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development’ and it is celebrated on 21 May. What does people do on that day? – There are a lot of things to do on that day. For example, people would visit museums or galleries that are dedicated to other cultures. Learning another language is also one of the activities that you can do on this day.
Leaning another language is too much work? How about relaxing to a movie marathon about other cultures. If you usually watch English movies maybe on this day you can try watching Indian or Korean movies. Another similar relaxing and fun activity as the previous one is listening to traditional music from different ethnicities. You can enjoy listening to the music at the same time you can learn why this music is a tradition for other ethnicities. Kill two birds with one stone! Other than listening to and seeing traditions from other cultures, you can wear a traditional outfit to show your respect for other culture. This is a great way to celebrate diversity and enjoy the day.
Diversity Is Not Only for Human
Most people always thought that diversity is only for human. That is true but other things also have their own diversity. Human diversity is the diversity among people, races, and cultures. For example, there are dark-skinned people, light-skinned people, black people, white people, Asian people, brown people, etc. But this diversity can also be found in the biology of plants, animals, and bacteria.
There's also diversity in geography, ecosystems, and habitats of the planet. The diversity of habitats can be found in the rainforests, deserts, oceans, plains, and mountains. The diversity of animals can be found in the sea creatures, amphibians, mammals, and birds.
The diversity of plants can be found in the orchids, grasses, trees, and ferns. The diversity of bacteria can be found in the harmful ones that can make you sick and the helpful ones that can make you healthy. Diversity is not only for human – but also for the universe.
There are at least 400,000 galaxies in the universe. Many of them are like the Milky Way. It is estimated that there are at least 25 billion stars in the Milky Way. The universe is filled with different types of galaxies: spiral, elliptical, irregular, spiral barred, irregular, blue compact and blue compact dwarf. Many people never saw the diversity all around them. Diversity is not just for human, but also other things. They just have not been exposed to diversity. Some people are lucky to be exposed to different culture and have an opportunity to learn something new. But for most people, this opportunity is not given.
Different Types of Diversity
Did you know there are different type of diversity? According to Allient International University, there are four types of diversity:
- Internal Diversity
- External Diversity
- Organizational Diversity
- Worldview Diversity
Internal diversity are the characteristics that is related to a situation that a person born into. Which means that there are things that people didn’t choose for themselves. Such as, race, ethnicity, age, national origin etc. That is to say that for someone born into a certain situation, it is not something that he/she has chosen for him/herself. It is something that has already been chosen for him/her. External diversity is used to describe the things that are related to that person but are not the characteristic that a person was born with. A simple way of describing is that it is the things that a person puts on to show that they are who they say they are to the world. It is the stuff that we wear, our makeup, our hair, and our style. It is who we act, what we do, and what we say.
Organizational diversity, also called functional diversity relates to the differences between people that are assigned to them by an organization—essentially, these are the characteristics within a workplace that distinguish one employee from another. The most common way of thinking of the different employees is as: a) a leader, b) a follower, and c) a loner. A manager would be a leader; a salesperson would be a follower; and a developer would be a loner. These three descriptions of employee differences are not mutually exclusive.
There are people who lead, follow, and are at times loners. The main reason each of the three are often given for organizational diversity is that each worker brings something that the organization can use and benefit from.
Worldview diversity have many factors that can come together. Whether it would be internal, external, and organizational at the end of the day, everyone has a worldview that they align with. Examples of worldview diversity are political beliefs, moral compass, outlook on life, etc. Worldview diversity is a type of diversity that changes with time – we would view differently as we gain many experiences about ourselves and others. ** To conclude, these are things that people don’t know about diversity.
